The NHS has announced the launch of an artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory, aimed at finding new ways for advanced algorithms to enhance patient care. It will be supported by a £250 million investment, outlined by Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

“The Prime Minister and Health Secretary are right to highlight AI’s ability to transform and personalise healthcare and remove the burden of administrative tasks, allowing clinicians to spend more time with patients. This represents the start of a ‘huge health tech revolution’.
“The Royal College of Radiologists has also highlighted the leading role of radiology in pioneering AI, where the technology can support better patient care by speeding up the diagnosis process.
“Wellbeing Software’s technology is at the heart of this revolution. We are uniquely placed to help drive AI adoption as our software already manages and automates the workflow of the majority of NHS radiology departments already incorporating the emerging world of AI.”
AI in Action
The team at Wellbeing Software have already helped connect several NHS organisations with AI providers using our AI Connect gateway. The gateway enables the adoption of different AI applications within your existing reporting workflow, using a standardised approach.
This includes Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, where Behold.ai’s red dot prioritisation is working in conjunction with our software to help separate radiology studies into normal and abnormal categories in less than 30 seconds, based on more than 30,000 example images.
We also recently announced a partnership with stroke imaging specialist Brainomix, so that AI and deep learning can be harnessed to assist clinical decision-making for ischemic stroke patients. By applying AI when assessing the damage from ischemic stroke, Brainomix’s E-ASPECTS solution can help healthcare professionals to make faster and more informed decisions.
We are continuing to work with other providers in order to give radiology departments a route to implementing AI as quickly as possible.
Integration is key
Ultimately, the successful implementation of AI depends on the technology’s integration with existing radiology workflows as much as it does on the algorithms themselves. Because the power of AI lies in its ability to analyse and learn from vast quantities of data it needs access to the right information at the right time.
